Uluberia College

Uluberia College had been established on 16^th August, 1948 by the founder principal respected Professor Haripada Ghosal. But, the department of Mathematics started it's journey in 1960 and since then gradually it becomes one of the glorious and prestigious department of Uluberia College. In 1960, after being graduated in pure science from the Calcutta University, Professor Abdul Majed Mollaha had been requested by the Principal, Haripada Ghosal to establish this department and at that time Professor Mollaha had been appointed as a lecturer in mathematics at this college. After taking the steering of this department, Professor Mollaha completed Master’s degree in mathematics and also completed Ph. D. degree in mathematics. But, at the same time, keeping full control on this department from the core of his heart, he had driven the department for going ahead. That’s why, all the faculty members of this department will always remain grateful to Professor Mollaha for his kind and sincere attitude to make this esteemed department. In fact, Professor Mollaha didn’t act as a good teacher only; he was a very renowned social worker. He was an active member of the Red Cross society of India and for his notable performance in the Red Cross society of India; he had got the award “Rastrapati Puruskar” from our honourable President of India.

Thereafter, Mr. Prafullo Bag, actually who was demonstrator in the department of Physics of this college, was appointed as a lecturer in mathematics after completion master degree in mathematics from the Calcutta University.

Then, in 1964, two academically sound brilliant scholar in mathematics, viz. Dr. Jagadish Chandra Mishra and Dr. Pranati Kumar Pal had joined in this department as lecturer in mathematics and their gracious presence and innovative ideas made this department very much strong and popular. Though Professor Mishra spend a few years in this college, actually, after a few years, Professor Misra had joined in the post of Professor at IIT, Kharagpur, but Professor P. Pal spend his total service life in this department and made a remarkable development in the teaching of pure mathematics. In the 6^th decade or in  the 7^th decade, there were not enormous books on the topic of pure mathematics, but at that time citing several examples and applying several innovative ideas, preparing student friendly class notes on several topic of pure mathematics, he had spread the utility of learning pure mathematics in Howrah district and its adjoining district like Midnapore, Hoogly, south 24 porgona. At that time many students used to come from the above said districts to this department for learning mathematics. In 1964, honours course in mathematics had been started here with the leadership of Professor Mollaha, but Professor P. Pal played the most important and crucial role for smooth functioning and to carry on mathematics honours course at the beginning. For the benefit of the students, Professor Pal used to take classes in his residence during summer vacation and puja vacation. He has taken the charge of HOD in 1996 after the retirement of Dr. Mollaha.  Due to his heartiest effort, not only the department has been established, but also so many students of this department had been established in the field of teaching profession.

In 1971 and 1972, another two brilliant scholars with the background of applied mathematics, viz. Dr. Pratul Das and Prof. Smt. Archana Nag had joined in this department in the post of lecturer in mathematics respectively. After their joining, holding the hands of Professor Das and Professor Nag, applied mathematics became popular  in this department gradually. Later on, Professor Das became principal of our college and spend a long term in the post of principal till his retirement. But Professor Nag had spent her total service life in this department to teach students with utmost caring and sympathy. She was always very much punctual and dedicated to attend her classes and always talked in favour of the students, for the benefit of the students. In fact, Professor Nag had taken the charge of HOD in 2004 after the retirement of Dr. Pal. During her tenure, she had taken several steps to hold on the continuity and integrity of our department.

In January, 2000, Dr. T. K. Samanta joined in this department as a lecturer in mathematics with the background of pure mathematics by the recommendation of West Bengal College Service commission. Infact Dr. Samanta was a student of this department in his H.S. and graduation with honours course in mathematics. Dr Samanta had to take the charge of bursar of this college with the request of our honorable governing body. In 2008, Dr Samanta had taken the charge of HOD after the retirement of Professor Nag and in that year, Dr Samanta with the help and full-fledged support of the other faculty member of this department started the course for M. Sc. in applied mathematics in distance learning mode under Vidyasagar University. In 2018, the course for M. Sc. in applied mathematics in distance learning mode had been stopped and the course for M. Sc. in pure mathematics in regular mode under the University of Calcutta had been started with the approval of University and the higher education department of the government of West Bengal. Still the course for M. Sc. in pure mathematics in regular mode is running on here. With the introduction of M. Sc. course in mathematics, so many students of Uluberia and its adjoining area are being benefited enormously.

In 2005, an extremely brilliant scholar Dr. Shibsankar Das, topper in M. Sc. in applied mathematics at Vidyasagar University, topper in M. Tech. in computer science at IIT, Kahgragpur, joined in this department as a lecturer in mathematics with the background of applied mathematics by the recommendation of West Bengal      College Service commission. Right now, Dr. Das, IQAC convener, have taken every charge on his own shoulder for all kind of developments of this college. Dr Das is very much popular teacher among the students and as well as popular among all the teachers of this college. After joining here, he started a programme named by “Get Together” in our department and still this programme is being carried out in our department in every year.

In 2015, Dr Sanjay Roy, an extremely brilliant student of our department, joined in this department as a lecturer in mathematics with the background of pure mathematics by the recommendation of West Bengal College Service commission. Thereafter, in 2021, Dr Anup Singha, an extremely brilliant student of our department, topper in  M. Sc. in applied mathematics at Kalyani University, joined in this department as a lecturer in mathematics with the background of applied mathematics by the recommendation of West Bengal College Service commission. Both Dr Roy and Dr Singha are extremely dedicated to their teaching and punctual to attend their classes. There is no boundary in their popularity among the students. In fact, always they try to interact with the students regarding their personal problem related to study and also are trying to take care of individual students.

Later on, a few outstanding students of our department, viz, Sri Tuhin Kumar Mondal in 2015, Sri Shyan Ghosh in 2018, Sri Sanjib Kumar Mondal in 2019, Sri Kunal Shau in 2018, Smt. Bhagrashree Chandra in 2018, after completion of their master’s course in mathematics, have joined in our department in the post of SACT by the recommendation of the higher education department, government of West Bengal. In fact, apart from above said five teachers under SACT, another three excellent teachers viz., Smt Oishika Pal in 2018, Smt Shrabani Mondal in 2019, Smt Arpita Bhowmick in 2019, have joined in our department in the post of SACT by the recommendation of the higher education department, government of West Bengal. The above said eight teachers under the post SACT are very much punctual and sincere about their taking classes, well caring and having soft attitude towards students.
